Population 65 years an older by the U.S. county

In 2019 there were over fifty million people in the United States aged 65 and older. This composes about 15 percent of the total of America’s population.

Florida has the highest percentage of sixty-five plus inhabitants. However, in absolute terms, the largest number of elderly people live in California.

The number of Americans ages 65 and older is forecasted to more than double from 46 million today to over 98 million by 2060, and the 65-and-older age group’s share of the entire population will rise to approximately 24% from 15%.

The older population is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse. Between 2014 and 2060 the share of the older population that is non-Hispanic white is projected to drop from 78.3% to 54.6%.
