A number of years regions of Greece were part of the Ottoman Empire.

  • In most minor islands Ottoman control was indirect, no garrisons, annual visit of Ottoman fleet to gather taxes only or sailors to serve.
  • Several in-land places autonomous, no Muslims allowed, inhabitants had the task to guard mountainous passages.
  • Peloponnese semi-autonomous between 1715-1821 (Christians participated in local government).
