For countries with higher GDP per capita (shaded green), the country’s historical values are examined to find the closest year (labeled) to China’s current value, and vice versa for countries with a lower value (shaded red). Deeper colors mean larger gaps.

For example, in 2016 China’s GDP per capita amounts to 6893 USD, for South Korea, it reached that level in 1987 (6629 USD). And GDP per capita of Philippines in 2016 is 2753 USD, which China has achieved in 2005 (2738 USD).
