After the fall of the Akkadian Empire in the 22nd century BCE, Mesopotamia entered a perion of chaos and decline. This process was eventually revered by the Third Dinasty of Ur, who went on to create a large empire across the Middle East, creating the Neo-Sumerian Empire.
